My journey as a mom began in 2010. At that time, newborn portraits were not a big thing. Sure, maybe you had a photo taken in the hospital but now it's totally different. In the last decade, the genre has exploded and your social media may be filled with adorable little babies in super cute poses.  I have been photographing newborns for six years and I love it. However, my goals with newborn portraiture have changed. Listen, don't get me wrong, I love an adorable little newborn all squished up and posed. But, I have a fallen in love with a more modern, laid-back and connection-based approach to newborn photography. This genre is called lifestyle newborn photography.

First of all, what is lifestyle photography? or lifestyle newborn photography? A lifestyle session is meant to be more of a story-telling session that showcases your new family connection. We use natural light and your own props/accessories or outfits to document your newborn. These sessions are also SO GREAT if you have an older sibling that have a hard time sitting still or "posing." I find kiddos are much more comfortable in their home environment and I can capture some great images of them playing if mom or dad are busy with baby.

Why do I love this genre more than studio-posed newborn photography?
1. They're done in YOUR home and on your time (as a new mom, this is huge! No rush to get out the door and somewhere on time with your new little one. If you're a first time mom, you'll GET this AFTER you have the baby ;)

2. It takes A LOT of pressure off parents, siblings and photographer to get the baby to pose. Posing a newborn is almost impossible with they're awake and that can eat up a lot of your session time getting them to sleep.  It also takes up to 15 minutes per pose and is difficult to get a lot of variety with studio-posed images.

3. Lifestyle portraits are more natural. We're not going to be putting your baby into a froggy-pose or a non-natural position (albeit super cute)

4. They show how tiny your baby is in comparison to you, your house, pets, etc.

5. They focus more on connection than cuteness. I want to tell your story of being new parents. Sing your new baby a song, read them a book, feed them, cuddle them, smell their new baby smell. I'll help you capture all of the sweet, baby details.

I think a better name for these sessions are “Connection Sessions.” We’ll capture every little wrinkly toe, eyelash, yawn, and sweet snuggle. A lifestyle session is meant to tell the heart-warming story of your first few weeks at home with your new baby. Clients rave about lifestyle sessions as they’re done in your space and on your time and takes the pressure out of getting a baby to “pose” a certain way.  The sessions are also baby-led which means we allow for every cry, diaper change and cuddle needed (these also make for adorable portraits). expertise, your baby can be naturally posed or swaddled and photographed in their crib or special places in your home. We also get beautiful family images using natural light. Pets and siblings are also included in all of the images. I also go through and highlight all the details you put into the nursery.

Finally, I am able to offer a few posed images if you realllllyyyyy love both studio and lifestyle now. We do a small mini posed session with a few simple poses. I prefer to use props for these images as we are still trying to follow that laid-back, stress-free approach.

|Selecting a Photographer| https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2018/1/selectingaphotographer

You DESERVE to have all of the options in regards to having your portraits done. Ask the right questions!

1. Ask the photographer if they specialize in the genre you are interested in. This is especially important for newborn portraits. A photographer that shoots everything: weddings, pets, families, commercial, etc may or may not have all the knowledge and skills to properly create posed newborn images.

2. When viewing images of a photographer--ask yourself: could I or someone I know do these? How is the posing? Are the images unique and special? Does their skin look soft and delicate? How are the images being shot? Will you get a variety of angles? Are babies being posed in safe props with a spotter?

3. When discussing investment and product options-- The cheapest option is not always the best option.

--Why is the photographer charging so little? Are they fully enhancing and editing your images? Are they a legal business and insured? Are they spending the necessary time meeting with you before the session and after the session? Do they have expansive prop and backdrop options? Have they invested in lighting courses and the best camera lenses/equipment?

--Does the photographer offer more than just digitals? I know owning all of the digitals seems like the new trend, but what are you really going to do with them? And, unforuntately, you don't have access to quality print labs that guarantee accurate colors and products that are going to be around for a lifetime.

Will your photographer also help design your images into a beautiful wall design or album? There are so many more options out there than just digitals. You DESERVE the best art products for your new little one.

|morning light| https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2017/9/-morning-light

The pace of life around the Petrie household has certainly picked up. Brayden, Keira and Isla are all at very different stages in their life and require different needs and activities to keep them happy. I feel like life is flying bye faster than ever and I'm always just trying to catch up.

Isla is nursing around the clock and I am up every three hours during the night to meet her needs. This morning, I lied next to her as she nursed so I could get a bit of rest. Instead of waking up as she usually does, she fell back to sleep. I slowllllyyyy got out of bed.

The stars had aligned...  all three children were still sleeping. PERFECT!

It was time to sneak downstairs, watch a tv show and enjoy a cup of coffee for the first time in a looonngggg time.

Something held me back. Something said stop... enjoy this moment. This moment will pass before you know it.  SONY DSC

I stared around my messy bedroom.

Instead of annoyance at the random assortment of kid socks and toys, books that needed to be read and half-empty water glasses, I saw the joy that they bring into my life.

The morning light--this time--didn't reveal all of the chores that needed to be done but a room that is filled with love. The place where my children still want a story to be read to them every night. The place where I sleep next to a man that loves all of us unconditionally.

I looked as that light hit Sasha as she took up her post guarding Isla. That dog drives me nuts sometimes but I had to appreciate her loyalty to my children. I swear that Sasha has never truly slept more than a moment because she is always on high alert protecting us. SONY DSC

SONY DSC And then, I looked at Isla. The light touched her sweet little face. Her tiny arms were curled up around her head and hands clenched into tiny fists. Her head, as always, turned towards where I sleep. I felt a pinch of sadness and I realized how much she has already grown and changed in such a short amount of time. I felt guilty for not soaking in her tininess more. That morning light reminded me to be grateful to have the ability to nurse her instead of focusing on my lack of sleep.

I looked over at the mirror. Instead of resenting my disheveled hair and dark circles, I laughed.

Normally, I spend a ton of time making each of my images perfect with posing and Photoshop magic.

Here is my life unscripted and raw.

I'm so glad something made stop and capture it.  SONY DSC

What to Wear to Define your Portrait Images https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2016/8/what-to-wear-to-define-your-portrait-images So, you have decided to have professional portrait images done! Excellent!

Now.. what are you going to wear?

I can't emphasis this point any more: YOUR CLOTHING CHOICE(S) MAKE AN INCREDIBLE DIFFERENCE IN HOW YOUR IMAGES TURN OUT!

I want you to look at the following images... disclaimer: these are NOT my images AND try not to compare the editing.

What do you notice about the COLOR choice?

What happens to the image when you have soft colors vs bold colors?

The OUTFIT choice? Casual versus dressy?

Does the "feel" or "emotion" of the images seem to change?

family portrait ideas, family picture poses, pose, family session, parent pictures, backlighting, backlight, beautiful, pretty, professional, girl family, matilda jane:

Here's another example... (THESE ARE NOT MY PHOTOS!)

The images above are similar in color palette yet the end result is completely different.

Also, for me as a photographer, I will get inspired by your outfit choice. You're helping me set the tone and feeling of your images.

Suggestions:

1. Choose Outfits that Fit Your Personality

For starters, I think clothing identifies your personality and your interests. I wouldn't suggest going out and buying an outfit that doesn't represent who you are! Also, I'd suggest picking "timeless" outfits and NOT something so trendy that your family photos will look outdated in a few years.

2. Choose Outfits that Flatter your Body Type

I would also recommend finding clothes that fit well and make you feel confident! If you have a particular part of your body you are nervous about showing, find an article of clothing that will be most flattering. For example, as short gal with a wider frame, I know that my legs do not look so great in skinny leg jeans. I know I personally feel better about myself when I'm rocking a fierce but flattering outfit. And, when I'm feeling confident, I'm more at ease AND when I'm more at ease, I know I will take better pictures. I'd hate for you to feel uncomfortable during your session and not show your true personality. I'd also hate for you to get your images back and regret clothing choices.

With that being said, for both of us, please iron/de-wrinkle your outfits. Yes, I use photoshop and I can certainly remove wrinkles. But, let's say I have 25-30 images to edit and I have to dewrinkle your clothes in each image... that makes for an unhappy photographer and that much longer to get your images back.

3. Family Portrait Choices

Your goal in family portraits to to have a similar color scheme but NOT look too "matchy". You also want to avoid patterns that conflict with one another. Let's say you are a family of four...

Dad-solid button up shirt in navy blue, slacks

Mom-cream dress, navy blue accessories

Son-solid button up shirt in cream, slacks

Daughter-navy lace dress and cream headband

In this scenario, you have everyone following a similar color scheme and it will not be too "busy to the eye."

Still not sure where to start?

a. Check out the link below

b. Decide on which style best suits your family AND what color scheme makes sense for our location/time of day/season etc

c. ASK ME! I LOVE helping with styling sessions.

Green Lakes Family Session https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2016/7/green-lakes-family-session Green Lakes Sunrise Session

I met the Daiuto family for a beautiful sunrise session at Green Lakes State park earlier this summer. They were such an easy-going family and we shared a lot of laughs throughout our time together. I feel that the hardest part of photography for both client and photographer is feeling comfortable enough to let your true personality show.

I personally try and bring props (in this case a loveseat!) or find locations to help people feel more natural while having their portrait taken. The loveseat helped the true family spirit emerge by letting them cuddle in and play on the couch. After, we were able to go to a more wooded location and by that time baby P was more than happy to give me some amazing smiles and "ham" it up for the camera. It was a great session and I am always grateful to work with such amazing families in the CNY area :)

I've been blessed to begin Kenzie's journey with a maternity session last summer. Her mommy and daddy were so excited to meet their baby girl.

Since last summer, I've had the pleasure of capturing Kenzie's milestones every 3 months.

Each time, I'm amazed to see the changes in her mental and physical development.

The one constant has been her easy-going nature and lovable, bubbly personality that was evident from the start!

Sharlie and New Baby Girl!

A few months ago, Sharlie called me to discuss details about a maternity and newborn bundle. We hit it off and kept in contact the weeks leading up to her maternity session. She was open to the idea of going to the more "artsy" side of maternity photos and we started to plan out our ideas.

As part of my maternity sessions, I'm willing to split the cost of a maternity gown with my momma-to-be. Sharlie sent me a picture of gowns she liked and I immediately thought we needed a flower headband to go with her gorgeous outfit. I might be artsy but I AM NOT crafty, so with a LOT of glue and even more prayers I created a flower crown.

The final decision was...where?! I came across Elmwood Park in Syracuse through an internet search and immediately fell in love. A small stream, beautiful cobblestone bridges and lovely scenery all added to the dreamy quality of this session.

I can't wait to meet Sharlie's baby girl in July!

Lucas' first photo session was a.w.e.s.o.m.e!

He adored being wrapped up and I loved snuggling with him during the session (complete with taking in the fresh, newborn smell ;)...I know you're all jealous)

I really enjoyed meeting Lucas and his parents (who have an amazing taste in music!) I am a firm believer in playing music during a session as it can set the artistic tone for the images. I mean... look at how cool this little guy is!

Aiden was amazing during his session and slept the ENTIRE time which allowed for me to get a gazillion different poses and angles.

Oh, and if you haven't noticed, he is wayyyyyy too stinking' cute! Look at that hair!

Baby Sofia

"Tiny Perfection"

I was honored to photograph sweet Sofia for her proud parents and extended family.

As I was setting up, I met with several members of the extended family who were on visit to meet this beautiful little girl. The grandparents not only took care of their daughter and granddaughter but the photographer, as well. A freshly-brewed, cup of green tea was given to me and I have never tasted such tea as this. Throughout the session, if my tea became cold, a new one replaced the old.

I felt like they were truly happy to have me there photographing their new bundle of joy.

Baby Sofia was a dream for a newborn photographer. She slept for her entire session and was absolutely adorable.

Her features were so delicate and tiny.

I had the honor and privilege of photographing Amrita's glowing pregnancy. Arundeep and Amrita were absolutely a delight to work with and were open to so many of my suggestions (a photographer's dream!)

It was around 34 degrees and you would never know from looking at their images (I had a winter coat and hat on...brr!) :) Despite the cold temperature, Mother Nature granted us some beautiful sunset light and this just added to the ambience of their images.

I look forward to meeting their baby girl in May and capture their amazing journey into parenthood. Congratulations!

Syracuse Engagement Photographer-Matt and Jess https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2016/3/syracuse-engagement-photographer-matt-and-jess Matt and Jess

I was honored when Matt and Jess asked me to be their wedding photographer. I have known Matt for a long time and have come to adore his sense of humor and capacity to care for others. Of course, Matt would find his match in someone as every bit as caring; Jess is such a kind, compassionate person with a great personality.

Their engagement location was a place near and dear to both of their childhoods. If you know these two, you know how big their hearts are and it was only fitting that they picked a location that had sentimental value to their lives.

Matt and Jess have a special connection and one that was apparent during their engagement session. I loved as I went through their images, I could see the love that they have for one another. For much of the session, I could see them whispering or giggling about something as they snuggled in close.

Aiden also showed a genuine excitement about the coming together of Matt and Jess. He was absolutely adorable in many of the portraits and I can't wait to see his smile on their wedding day.

This type of connection makes for beautiful and timeless photographs.

I can't wait to capture this same connection on their wedding day <3

Syracuse Family Photography-1st Family Ski Day https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2016/1/syracuse-family-photography-1st-family-ski-day The Petrie Family

"1st Family Ski Outing"

Yesterday, Bill announced to the kiddos that we had enough snow to finally take a trip to the mountain for some skiing. This would be our first time together skiing as a family of four.

Side Note: Brayden has been practicing snowboarding and skiing for the last two seasons and was ready to try it again. He and Kiki also received skis and boots for Christmas (thanks Grandma Sue and Grandpa Bruce!) so they were eager to try out their new gear.

The room erupted into yelling, cheering, and singing. My three kids began jumping around the room yelling things like, "YAYYYYYYYYYY! We are going to Sing Song Mountain!"

"I want to do (go) ssssshhhhkiiiiiiiiiiii"

The largest and oldest of the three children seem to be most excited.

I am NOT a fan of the cold and often mutter a few choice words about the weather under my breath. I wasn't exactly jumping for joy BUT I love seeing how excited my three kids get about their winter sports.

I've been snowboarding for a few years (because Bill made me...) and would probably enjoy it more if it didn't involve cold weather and potential death.

If you can figure out a way to have hot weather AND skiing AND the elimination of injury, I'd totally be down.

Anyways, I live in Central New York, my husband is obsessed with snowboarding, apparently my children will be too AND this blog post was supposed to be about the awesome day we had so, I better suck it up, buttercup.

Under normal circumstances, it takes us about 1.3446 hours to get ready to go ANYWHERE. We actually beat our average because the kids were so excited to go skiing that they dressed themselves (pretty well, I might add) and all three were waiting at the door.

Every winter item that we own has been packed.

Syracuse Family Photographer

Where has the time gone? They keep growing..

I wasn't sure how Kiki was going to do trying to ski at the age of two. Luckily for us, she's strong and more importantly...fearless. She grabbed her knees, pushed off and plastered a smile on her face (sigh, tear...how is she doing this?!)

By the end of the day, she took off backwards and laughed hysterically the entire time until someone caught up to her (oops, I hope my mom isn't reading this...)

Syracuse Family Photographer Syracuse Family Photographer

Brayden tried skiing for a few hours and worked on learning how to slow himself down. It is absolutely adorable watching him go on the chairlift with Bill.

I'm glad to be there to watch the father/son bond grow as they share a mutual love for snowboarding. Already, Brayden runs back and forth in the living room doing "half-pipe tricks" and will stop at nothing to get outside to work on his riding skills on his mini snow hill. (Bill couldn't be prouder)

Syracuse Family Photographer

Warning: this post turns a bit sappy as I'm realizing how special today was for our family.

Being a snowboarder was never really on my life's to-do list. I've already addressed the cold factor and most of the time, I'm terrified of falling and breaking something.

want to enjoy it. I really do. Mostly, for Bill...

I want to experience what Bill feels when he rides. I never knew how passionate he was about snowboarding until we went for the first time. He's a great rider and you can both see and feel his passion for the sport. You can actually see a little glow around him. Sometimes, I come down in the morning and all three kids are watching a pro snowboarding film while eating cereal. (There's that glow around Bill, again)

Sometimes, when I'm in the right frame of mind, I do enjoy it... a little. I find the peace and joy in connecting with nature and doing something amazing with my body... I experience, on a small level, the passion that Bill has for snowboarding. I get a little glow.

Then, I hit a patch of ice, fear for my life and remember how damn cold it is outside.

But, today, I had an ENTIRE day of connection. I watched my family connect. I enjoyed my trips down the mountain. It clicked for me today.

Syracuse Family Photographer

This guy. My third child. My husband has created a lifetime of memories already for us.

These memories might be a little colder than I would have anticipated... but I'm so happy that I've found someone with a passion. I also am happy that I have found someone that I'm willing to go out of my comfort zone for and try new things. Finally, I'm so happy to see Bill creating such a strong connection with Bray and Kiki doing something that he loves.

As we left the mountain, he grabbed my hand and said, "thanks for a great day."

No, Bill, thank you <3

What a great evening for portraits. We chose a location in Mexico, NY that is very dear to me. The fall weather was absolutely perfect and we were able to capture a few beautiful sunset images!

Syracuse Family Photographer-Ava's First Birthday! https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2015/9/syracuse-family-photographer-avas-first-birthday

Miss Ava's First Year

Sigh... where does the time go? I can't believe Miss Ava is already one!

I've ALWAYS said, I LOVE watching how babies change and grow through their first year.

(I probably could also write a ton about how much parents change the first year, as well) :)

Ava-Newborn

Here was her debut <3

She was already so lovely. I loved her tiny, delicate fingers and nose. I loved seeing the connection between Ava and her new parents and Grandmother. They all worked so well together and were already so in love with their little girl. I might be busy photographing your sweet baby but I pick up on those little connections.

My weakness is cute baby feet. They only stay little and wrinkly for a short time!

Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer"SONY DSC Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer"SONY DSC

Flash forward a year... look how much she has changed!

A spirited, full of love (and stylish, I might add) little gal :)

It is hard to watch them grow so fast but each phase brings so many new things to love.

I think these photographs will help you always treasure the precious little one she was and always will be in your hearts <3

Syracuse Family Photographer Grow with Me Portraits Abby https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2015/8/Abby Abby's First Year

I have been honored to photograph the major milestones of Abby's first year. It was has been wonderful getting to know Abby and her wonderful parents. I think the first year is so special for obvious reasons. These little ones change and grow so fast and it goes by in an instant.

Luckily, photographs can help us remember all of the intricate details of our loved ones.

Newborn Abby

Already showing us her beautiful blue eyes and gorgeous little lips. Later, those will eyes will help melt daddy and those little lips flash the best smiles.

Abby-7 Months

My goodness! What a HAPPY and content little baby Abby was. She was always ready to flash a smile and was such a little dolly for her portraits. At this point, she was able to sit up, crawl, nibble on her toes. During her session, she loved her cuddle time with Mommy and Daddy.

Great job with the first year Mommy and Daddy because she is one HAPPY and BEAUTIFUL little girl! <3

Let's start by saying that this was one of my favorite portrait sessions, ever!

The couple, the location, the lighting... beautiful!

Brian and Christina were both so open to all of my ideas. I am in love with taking pictures at Clark Reservation and thankfully, Christina was willing to trek around the park to the many scenic locations.

I love maternity portraits. I think pregnant women are absolutely stunning.

I was so inspired by this session and how beautiful Christina looked in all of her portraits.

(Brian, you're not so bad, as well ;) )

I can't wait to meet Brian and Christina's baby girl in a few weeks!

This session was such an amazing mix of posed and candid portraits. I spoke with Devon (beautiful Momma seen below) about really "capturing" her family. Young children are both fun and difficult to photograph because they are so unpredictable! But, we have to let kids be kids!

For this session, I had it in my head to find ways to photograph a family being, well a family

Well, how do you do that outdoors and with a family of five?!

(I'll tell you the secret if you promise not to tell...)

1. Play dress up

2. Find a comfy, vintage couch

3. Cozy up with a good book

4. LET A FAMILY BE A FAMILY

Syracuse Family Photography: "Forever Young" https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2015/6/syracuse-family-photography-forever-young "Forever Young"

Last week I did a blog post on if clients prefer more posed or candid photos. So, when I was asked to take portraits of Jake and Kaitlyn before their semi-formal, I immediately began going through various poses in my head. I loved the way the posed portraits came out but I always want to try and connect with the images in some way.

I couldn't help but think back to my days of going to dances and school events.

I miss that feeling of anticipation and pure, care-free excitement.

That moment when the boy you like asks you to a dance with a cute little message on a baseball...

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

Waiting for your date to arrive.... what will he think? How will he react to how beautiful I am?

SONY DSC ... and that one moment when he sees you for the first time and all of your questions have been answered.

SONY DSC

I think this has to be one of my favorite images of all time. As a Momma, I love this quiet little moment between mother and son. The independent and growing up young man who still needs a bit of help with these things... <3

SONY DSC

It's the little moments. Your first corsage.  SONY DSC

A holding of hands...

SONY DSC

A giggle between poses (what is this photographer thinking?!)

SONY DSC

And, of course, beautiful portraits that someday we will look back on...

SONY DSC

to remind us of how young we once were.

I hope you still have your memories to hold on to that remind you of being "Forever Young."

Syracuse Family Photographer-Candid or Posed Photography? https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2015/6/syracuse-family-photographer-wildflower --Capturing Meaningful Photographs--

"Posed or Candid?"

As a photographer, you always want to catch that great shot. But, photography like any art is completely subjective. So, what is a "great shot?"

When I first started taking photographs, I wanted that cute smiling picture. I spent (and still do spend) a lot of time trying to get my youngest clients to "smile for the camera!" But, now I am always looking for different ways to represent my clients.

It might be a different angle, focus point, effect, use of light, etc.

For example, I took my daughter, Kiki, out for a little photo session that other day because I loved her little jumper so much. As usual, I tried to start with some structure. You can tell from my first picture that my "stylized" photo session of my two year old didn't start off so well.

Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"SONY DSC

Ok, so let's proceed with some peek-a-boo and Mommy making ridiculous animal noises from behind the camera. Laugh, giggle, smile, BAM! Cute picture!

Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"SONY DSC Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"SONY DSC Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"SONY DSC

I love the above images so much. I do, I really do.

But I love these ones below just as much and maybe a little bit more.

I feel like they tell the story of who my daughter is so much more. The little girl that DOESN'T want to pose for pictures. The two year old that I watched run around the yard, spin in circles, stop to laugh and brush the hair out of her eyes. Once she could see clearly, she noticed the cute little clover flowers and proceeded to pick a bunch.

Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"SONY DSC Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"SONY DSC Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"SONY DSC Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"SONY DSC

That to me is true photographic story telling. This is my goal. My photographic dream goal. It will require SO much work. But, I want to help my clients tell a story. I will figure out how to continue getting better and I will continue to seek out people who want me to help with the visual tale.

Figure out which style of photography is right for you and find someone who can photograph it.

Mother's Day-Syracuse, NY Family Photographer https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2015/5/mothers-day-syracuse-ny-family-photographer Happy Mother's Day!

This is my fourth year of being a mother.

Everyone tells you how fast it goes and to treasure every moment. And I try, oh how I try to soak each and every moment in but its hard with, you know, "life" getting in the way sometimes.  The "life" that so many of you are familiar with: prepping for the next day, baths, lunches, cleaning, workouts, play dates, coaching, dog walking, photography business stuff, bills... whoa, whoa, whoa, stop. (hammer time)

Ok, so quit complaining, Amanda, and soak it in! Soak these moments in.

So, this morning, I grabbed my camera. I didn't pose my family. I just captured them AS IS. AS MY LIFE REALLY IS.

I love them so much. SO SO SO much.

Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"SONY DSC

My husband, Bill. The man who cooks breakfast for me every morning. The same one who splits that list of responsibilities with me and is the greatest companion someone could hope for. And, well, he ain't too shabby on the eyes, either ;)

Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"SONY DSC

Then, there's Kiki. If you've met her, you know she marches to her own tune. She's silly, unpredictable and a complete joy. I came down after a nice sleep-in (thanks, hubs!) and there she was... my sunglasses on, cracking eggies and singing Elmo songs. That's my girl.

Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"SONY DSC

Oh, and this beautiful young man. His kindness and thoughtfulness has clearly been passed on from his father. Brayden has an "old soul" and is so concerned about everyone else's well-being. His smile and laugh makes my heart melt.

I'm so proud of the man that made me a mother.

I love the children that call me mommy.

Happy Mother's Day 2015 <3

"Renewal"-Syracuse, NY Family Photographer https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2015/5/-renewal--syracuse-ny-family-photographer Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer"SONY DSC

I participate in monthly photography challenges. These challenges are built around a word each month to help us in the group "think outside the box." Currently, my photography is a melding of my vision and that of the wishes of my client. However, with these challenges, I can do whatever my little photography heart and soul desires.

This month's word was: renewal.

I began to build a story and a concept in my head about a little girl who is experiencing the changes and renewal of life that comes with springtime. She's emerging from a winter hiberation and is finally awakening to new, beautiful changes. I closed my eyes and pictured a long dress and a headband full of flowers.... a beautiful, outdoor landscape in the spring....a few blooming flowers...

I like where this idea is going....

Now I just needed a model. What little girl could perfectly fulfill that role? Maybe you a believer in fate... maybe you are a believer in coincidence. Either way, the little girl I found, you ask? Her name is LILY. Could it be any more perfect than that? A pretty, Lily, a delicate flower girl. And being people living in Central, NY, this real-life Lily was truly emerging like a new flower. I feel  we hibernate all winter long and slowly we start to emerge again.

Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer"SONY DSC

...this concept was really starting to come together. (I'd really like to take credit for thinking allllllll of these details, ha! ;) )

But where?! Where to bring my beautiful, Lily? Luckily for us, Lily's Grandma Sue has a breathtaking backyard.

(I mean seriously, this place is a photographer's dream land)

This concept came together so easily. I made Lily a skirt (which so happened to be in her favorite color, YES!) and added a few outfit choices. Lily's mom, Lily and I drove to the location and BAM! photo magic.

Jay-Newborn Photography-Syracuse, NY family Photographer https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2015/4/jay-newborn-photography-syracuse-ny-photographer Welcome to the World, Mr. Jay William Wallace!

This portrait session was extra special because it was for a special mommy-one that I have been friends with for over 25 years! I can still remember sharing crayons and blowing bubbles in Kindergarten with Jackie and here we are now with our own babies. (little tear) Most memories I have of school have her in there. I hope that our kiddos find their own partner in crime like Jackie and I had in each other.

I was so excited when she told me last summer that she was expecting. I knew her and Dave would make amazing parents. Little Jay has been born into an extended family on BOTH sides that I have come to know. He will be so loved... :)

Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"SONY DSC Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"SONY DSC

I arrived at Dave and Jackie's house and started with some lifestyle pictures of them and Jay in their natural setting. His nursery is gorgeous! The soft gray theme and the special details that Jackie and her family put into creating this space made it so cozy.

Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"SONY DSC

Jay seems to content in Daddy's arms. Dave loved to talk to Jay and you could see the connection between the two. Just a little newborn boy and his daddy looking into each other's eyes...

Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"Syracuse, NY Photographer "family photographer" "newborn photographer"SONY DSC

Dave and Jackie seem like they've eased their way into being new parents. They are already working like a team and it seems like it's just something they've always done.

After a few diaper changes, cuddle and feeding sessions, Jay finally settled into a good sleep and we were able to do some more traditional posed shots. He was so smushy and cute! And, look at that hair! My god, that hair is adorable.

Photographic Journey-Syracuse Family Photographer https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2015/4/photographic-journey Well, this is it. My first attempt at blogging :) I thought it would only be appropriate to discuss my reasons for starting a photography business in the first place. If you are familiar with my background, you would know that I am a full-time teacher. I love teaching. I love going into work each day and working with some great young minds. However, for the last few years I have felt like something has been missing. What was it?

"Earliest Memories"

I spent hours upon hours looking through old photos during my childhood. I didn't often know the people in them but I loved the way I felt connected to them. I'd make up a story of what they were talking or laughing about. I was now a part of their story. My favorite images are from my parents' wedding album. My mother, is her {a-hem} gorgeous lace, sequenced, puffy, wedding dress. Ok, so maybe not one of the finest wedding fashion trends but, wow, did she look happy. And the people in her wedding party, they looked pretty happy too. And my Mimi, she was laughing at something in one of the photos. Maybe it was because my Poppa had told one of his infamous jokes?

I treasure those photos.

Another one of my fondest memories from my childhood was looking through the old "Time" magazine collection of famous photographs from the last century. I didn't quite understand the words or the history of what the captions said under the pictures but I certainly understood the emotion in the photos.

I think that's what draws me in. These are frozen moments of our lives. Real, amazing moments and people captured right there! I think I'll blog later on the history of the camera and all my nerdy fun facts but comeeeee onnnnnnn, this is one amazing invention! Imagine our lives pre-camera. Your average person from centuries ago? Forgotten. Your average person from today with their selfie? Captured in time.

"Photographic Magic"

So, in a continuation of today's theme, "A Photographic Journey," I wanted to share another major step in my life towards becoming a professional photographer in two words: Mrs. Arcadi. I will never forget being in the dark room for the first time as she took us through the process of developing our film. I felt like a proud momma holding her baby negatives, waiting to see what they could turn out to be. She had just shone light on a piece of undeveloped paper and put it into the developing chemicals. As she did it, she said, "watch, it's like magic." And as she swished her hand in the developer, just like that, an image of the moon slowly began to appear.

It was magic.

It was beautiful magic.

Thank you, Mrs. Arcadi, for sharing that magic.

My final step came when I realized that my two children were growing way too fast. I wanted to document every newborn wrinkle, every little finger, every milestone. And, I took all those precious little pictures for my family and I to enjoy. Then one day this year, I was teaching my students the history of the camera. The ah-ha! Zach Morris light bulb moment. I love photography. I love kids. I love having a creative outlet. Why not? Why not create personalized photographic experiences for others? I want to share that beautiful photographic magic.

So, here we are. I've started a business. I love the control of running my own business. I love the creative high I get with every click of that shutter. I love giving someone a photograph of their precious loved ones and seeing the same emotion I felt when I was a kid. I'd to think that fifty years from now, those photographs will help make people connected.

Any, hey, maybe there will be another little girl looking at the photographs that I took and she'll feel connected to people she's never met. Or she'll get to see her grandmother as a little kid.

That, my friend, is the power of photography.

Syracuse, NY Newborn Photographer-Austin's Newborn Session! https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2015/4/austin-newborn-photography-syracuse-ny Austin was my first newborn of 2015!

Oh man, did he pack a lot of personality in his tiny little baby body! His little eyes were so bright and alert during the times he was awake. Some newborns are kind of “out of it.” Not Austin! He already seems so curious about the world :) We were lucky enough to catch a few glimpses of his adorable little grin and, wow, he’s going to give his parents a run for their money. You can tell he’s going to one awesome little boy someday <3

Newborn Photography Syracuse Family PhotographerNewborn Photography Syracuse Family Photographer"Syracuse family photographer", "syracuse newborn photographer", "syracuse photographer", "syracuse maternity photographer", "syracuse senior portrait photographer" I took more “lifestyle” type portraits during this session. These portraits are what I would like to offer future clients more and more. I love them!

These types of shots are meant to be more candid and allows for the family’s connections to shine through. As I would prepare for the next round of pictures, Sara would gently calm Austin by stroking his hair and talking to him softly. These are such amazing mother and baby moments. That connection… those precious moments holding that brand new life. I’m so honored to have been able to capture these moments for them so they won’t be forgotten.

I loved the connection Austin had with his dad, Dan.

I think what astonished me most about the session was how much he moved his head around to find the sound of his dad’s voice. Each time he heard a sound, his little eyes would follow to the source! What an astonishing thing for such a young baby to do!

Editing Fun:Spring Practice with My Babe, Kiki-Syracuse family photographer https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2015/4/editing-fun-spring-practice-with-my-babe-kiki-child-photography-syracuse-ny I think one of my favorite things about photography in this age of technology is the ability to manipulate photographs like never before. I know there are people who will completely disagree with me on this but, for me, it is a lot of fun to take a photograph to a different place.

Even when I shot film, processed and developed my own images, I still was messing around with the final product. I would dodge and burn, hand color and tone my photographs. I learned a fun process of double exposing my film in camera and always loved the results.

Now, thanks to photoshop, I can take a image and play with it as little or as much as I want.

I really haven't developed a set style yet. I know many photographers that I could pick their photographs out a line-up based on how they are edited. Some have an extraordinary polished, pure, rich look. Others have a bright, soft pastel... while others choose a matte, dreamy kind of look. The list goes on and on.

I don't know where I will fall just yet. I am narrowing down my style more and more. I definitely love warm tones. I like rich images. I do love a good matte background. I love, love, love shooting during golden hour to get those tones.

However...photoshop CAN NOT and WILL NOT fix everything. To get an amazing image you have to do a lot of work in camera. I am so MUCH more aware of what type of images I want to capture BEFORE I even click the shutter. I spend a lot of time before a session letting the location's background, setting, or the props for a session inspire me. Then, I view photos after the session I just kinda let the photos "speak to me." Weird, I guess... but, that is how my brain works.

I love emotion. I love the little details. I want an image to stop you in your tracks. This requires A LOT of work in camera. I can't magically create that in photoshop. I've learned a lot about manipulating my camera. I shoot only in manual and can quickly fix my settings.

I think my biggest tip for clients is to find a photographer whose images speak to you. A lot of photographers put a lot of of time and effort into making sure every detail about your image is absolutely perfect. Actually, don't just find a photographer. Find an artist.

Seriously, in 2015 ANYONE can take a picture. They can buy a fancy camera. They can edit them on their phone app. I get that and, hey, that's awesome. I'm happy to see people being able to capture more moments in their lives. But, if you want TIMELESS. If you want ART, pick a photographer that is good at their JOB.

Syracuse, NY Senior Portrait Photographer-Senior Portraits 2015! https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2015/3/senior-portraits-syracuse-ny Senior Portrait Sessions 2015

Senior portrait season is almost upon us! Senior portraits are such an important milestone session. These images tell two stories: they showcase  the ending of one story and the beginning of another. This reminds me of one of my favorite lyrics: "every new beginning comes from some other beginning end..." I think of my own two children. They are in their "beginning." In a few years, they will also have another beginning which will signal the end of this moment in their life. We guide, we nurture, we grow then we let go of them.

I love this melding of so many different emotions. I think that's why I love doing senior portraits so much :) What an amazing time in these young adults' lives.

I want to create tailored, customized portrait sessions for each of my seniors. Your boutique-style experience starts with a pre-session consultation. During this interview, we will discuss your personal style and your vision. I will make suggestions for wardrobe and hair. For senior girls, I always recommend getting your hair and make-up done by a professional before the session. We will discuss possible locations and props you might wish to bring.

The most important thing, in my opinion, is to have these portraits represent each unique individual I photograph. I don't want to create a cookie-cutter portrait session. We want to create photos that will wow your family and friends. And, I want to create portraits that you can show your future family. Timeless, classic and uniquely you.

Each time I look back on the 2015 seniors I photographed, I see each of their unique personalities. I see how each of them started out nervous but were so comfortable by the end of the session. I love seeing the smiles and the confidence. I also love seeing the difference in each of their sessions. Each different place, the different poses, the different lighting... that's what we want! A unique session!

Syracuse Family Photographer-Lifestyle Session https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2015/3/bliss-lifestyle-photography I was lucky enough to be invited into two amazing photography groups that houses some brilliant and fantastic photographers from around the country. They post images for critique and share tips and advice. I have learned so much and we push each other to not only get better but to LOVE this creative field.

In one group, we complete "challenges" each month. They're not competitions but challenges for ourselves to "see and think" outside of the box. The world of photography can be, in some ways limiting, if you're trying to make a living off of it because certain trends are popular among client-wants.

I am just now finishing up my first full year of establishing a photography business and find myself continually tweaking and changing my photographic style. Each new lighting arrangement, camera lens, or photoshop magician's trick opens up new worlds.

So, let's bring these ramblings all together now. The challenge for this month's photography group was to create an image around the word, "bliss." I had all sorts of ideas for bliss: chocolate, a warm, comfy bed... these were just some of examples of how I would interpret bliss. But, how would I stage it? How would I create this. I thought of props and of who I would have take the photo. How would I create it?

But...again... we were supposed to think OUTSIDE the box. That's the biggest thing... stop trying to CREATE images and just LET them happen. Be inspired IN THE MOMENT.

This brings me to my images. My son, Brayden, was in the moment. He was feeling something. He was blissfully happy. He LOVES to "rock" out to music. He's four and a half and man, does this child know what he likes. He has his own playlist on Spotify. And, I'm not talking toddler tunes or Frozen music. I'm talking alternative Indie rock: Mumford and Sons, Kings of Leon, Young the Giant, Walk the Moon. He SINGS his little heart out when his favorite jam comes on.

So, I have my camera out and I'm taking his picture. And, I'm thinking... this. This is photography. This isn't staged. This isn't posed. These are the photographs I love to take. These are absurdly beautiful.

I feel like I achieved bliss this month. And it wasn't selfishly thinking of my own bliss. It was waiting for the right moment and capturing TRUE bliss. It wasn't forced. I didn't create it. I didn't stage it. I didn't pose it. This last photo is BLISS. I can't think of another word to describe his little face after seeing his favorite song.

Syracuse Newborn Photographer-Brody Michael's Newborn Pictures https://www.peatreephotography.com/blog/2015/2/brody-michael-newborn I am so excited to announce AND photograph Brody Michael! Momma had a tough labor but it was well worth it because he is absolutely gorgeous! I have been so honored to capture these precious moments in people's lives. This time in the hospital, those first 48 hours are magical. Yes, magical. This is the first time YOU and YOUR loved ones see this beautiful human for the FIRST time. Every detail, every toe, every finger, eyelash, wrinkle is examined and imprinted into memory.

There is also nothing like the fresh, excited feeling when you step onto the maternity floor. I had a few tears rolling down my face as I passed each room and could hear the subtle newborn cries. I felt joy and happiness for people I would never meet.

Newborns are such a gift and a story of inspiration. This little life can do anything. Who will they be? What will their personality be like? How will they affect the lives of others?

I am especially blessed to be able to capture my family members' lives. I was lucky enough to photograph Meghan and Jarrett's engagement, wedding, maternity, fresh 48 and (soon!) newborn photos! It has been a great journey with them this year and I can't wait to see where this road goes for them.

Congratulations, Meghan and Jarrett. Welcome to Earth, little Brody Michael! <3
