Fix-it-Friday: Pinball Baby

It’s time for Fix-it-Friday everyone and this week’s photo was a tough one. It goes to show you, though, the importance of getting your exposure right in camera. It is very, very, tough to fix a photo that is underexposed by more than a stop or two. But, this is still such a sweet photo of such a cutie-pie so it was really fun to work with. This photo was taken by Amy Pinney and is up for Fixin’ over at I Heart Faces.

The first thing I did was to run some noise reduction software. That helps to get rid of some of the graininess in the photo. I use Nik Software for both noise reduction and Color Efex Pro 2.0.

After reducing the noise I adjusted the levels to bring the exposure of the photo way up. Then I cropped to get in a little closer on her face and I used the clone stamp tool (in Photoshop 8.0) to clone out the dark spot on her arm (basically, you are “painting in” her arm). I also decided to clone out the jacket in the background. I don’t think there is anything really wrong with it but, just for fun, I decided to “get rid of it” and turn it into a backdrop. I also put a blur on the background and just left the little girl and the pinball table in focus. Of course, I also needed to play around with my Florabella actions and I decided I liked the “Soft Urban” action the best. I used the action at 100%.

Finally, I added just a touch of sharpening and that was that.

Nice! The blur in the background is perfect. I’ll have to try the noise reduction, I didn’t think of that. Thanks. :)

Nice! You and I think alike! I did the same thing to the background!

I love this! I really love how you made her and the table stand out! Great job.

Very nice edit! I love how you did the background. I had the same idea but not as good of an outcome. :-) Well done!

I tried just that technique on the background but I could get it just right….great job on this!

I like what you’ve done with blurring that coat out of the background. I fiddled with it, but couldn’t figure out anything that I liked. I do like yours though. I’ll have to remember that.

Here is what I did.
