The Velveteen Lion

This week’s theme at I Faces is “Nostalgia”. The very first thing I thought of –when it comes to wonderful memories of my childhood–is my little buddy “Leo”. I got Leo when I was in the hospital at the age of 5 to get my tonsils out. He and I become inseparable buddies from that point on. I threw birthday parties for Leo (complete with cake), I dressed him up (yes “He” is a boy, but he also wears dresses. That’s just the way it was when I was 5), and I took him ~everywhere~ with me. Now that I am full-grown, I’ve let him go sleep in my daughter’s room at night. She is just about the same age now as I was when I got him. And, she and I look a fair bit alike. So, it is really amazing and wonderful to watch her playing with him. It’s like being able to actually look at myself as a child.

He used to have longer hair, but my sister cut it off and told me it would all grow back. It never did. He has also lost an eye over all those years and he’s had his smile rubbed off with kisses. But, that’s all okay because that is what makes him “real”. I always believed that then, and my little girl believes it now. The Velveteen Lion.

Your Jamie is gorgeous! And very similar to mine. She has a large collection of soft toys that may have started life as boys, but still wear dresses more often than not!
